For a Sustainable Future

About a century ago, Sumitomo Chemical got its start by manufacturing fertilizers from gas emitted from copper smelting operations at the Besshi Copper Mine in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, aiming to solve the environmental problem of smoke pollution while helping to increase agricultural output. The Sumitomo Chemical Group actively promotes dialogue with internal and external stakeholders to continue to live up to the trust it has earned from society. In this way, the Group will continue striving to realize its vision with a sense of speed and determination while honoring the DNA that stretches back to the Company’s founding.

In the Medium-Term Corporate Plan launched in April 2019, we outline what we are striving for, namely, to achieve sustained growth for Sumitomo Chemical and build a sustainable society by creating both economic and social value.

Through its innovative technology, Sumitomo Chemical Group aims to achieve a sustainable world while also attaining its own sustainable growth, this will also help us align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth by the United Nations. Going forward, we progress our business with the responsibility to create a world where our planet can thrive, benefiting every one of us.

Social Contribution Activities

Based on the concept of contributing to establishment of sustainable society through achieving sustainable growth of business, the Sumitomo Chemical Group is committed to social contribution activities undertaken from the perspectives of solving global problems and coexistence with local communities.
Sumitomo Chemical, its worksite in Japan and overseas, and Group companies engage in a variety of activities to meet the needs of local communities in order to build good relations with them.

Activities in China

[1] The implementation of college internship program, establishment of scholarship and creation of lectures

[1] Internship program
Sumitomo Chemical receives 50 students annually from Peking University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Southwest University, Chongqing University, Sichuan University of Foreign Languages and so on to Japan for 6 weeks’ internship. Sumitomo Chemical expects that this internship program can lead more Chinese students to be familiar with Japan and Japanese enterprises, and provide them with an opportunity to consider their own professional career. Meanwhile, this program can also make due contributions to China-Japan friendship.
[2] Establishment of scholarship
To encourage students to study diligently and improve the comprehensive quality, Sumitomo Chemical has established scholarship at Dalian University of Technology since 2006. In 2011, it has awarded scholarships to 64 students of Dalian University of Technology. In addition, Sumitomo Chemical has established scholarship at Dalian University of Foreign Languages.
[3] Creation of lectures
To continuously improve law education and scientific research level of Peking University Law School, Sumitomo Chemical has established "Fund of Chair Professor of Law at 40th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations" at Peking University. Peking University Law School owns higher influence in Chinese jurisprudential area; therefore, the strengthening of teaching staff at Peking university law school can greatly promote the law research of Peking University, as well as the academic development of Chinese jurisprudential area, thereby to advance the sustainable development of Chinese economy. Sumitomo Chemical hopes to make due contribution to the development of Chinese economy and the China-Japan friendship and communication through this activity.

[2] Education assistance activities of elementary school in Anhui province

[1] Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Management Company (Shanghai) have carried out education assistance activities to elementary schools at Sanliu Village, Huoqiu County, Anhui Province.

[2] Education assistance activities of elementary school in Anhui province

Since 2009, Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Management Company (Shanghai) has cooperated with Labor Union to carry out education assistance activities to the elementary schools in Sanliu Village, greatly improving the educational environment of Sanliu Village, Huoqiu County, poverty-stricken area in Anhui Province.
Since 2011, Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Management Company (Shanghai) have implemented "matching gift" system (the system of obtaining the capital enterprise donation is the same as that of staff fund-raising). Large amount of capital has been collected from the company leadership to staff. Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Management Company (Shanghai) took advantage of these capitals to reconstruct the basketball court of elementary school, add sports equipments and donate objects such as desks, chairs, sports goods, stationery and so on.
On 23rd September, 2011, the company representatives visited Sanliu Village School and attended the donation ceremony held locally. Three year’s assistance activities have achieved remarkable success which is best shown by those vigorous children.
From now on, Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Management Company (Shanghai) will continuously implement "matching gift" system, put the CSR theory of Sumitomo Chemical into practice, and create a favorable educational environment for children.

[2] The education assistance activities of Shanjin elementary school, Zongyang County in Anhui Province by Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Wuxi)

Since 2008, Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Wuxi) has held donation activity once a year.
The large endowments include both the company fund and staff contributions. Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Wuxi) donated 208 sets of desks and chairs, as well as various books to Shanjin Elementary School with those endowments. In June of 2011, company representatives visited the school and attended the donation ceremony held locally.

[3] Environmental Protection Activities

At the beginning of establishment of Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Wuxi), the top management of the company formulated the objectives of "energy-saving and emission reduction, green growth". The positive implementation of all departments greatly advance a series of effective investment of energy consumption reduction, which not only guarantees the normal operation of company production and saves a large amount of costs, but also positively responded to various energy consumption reduction policies of Chinese government and adapts to the global environment with increasingly strained natural resources. The series of energy-saving and emission reduction activities implemented by Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Wuxi) were received wide acclaim of all social sectors and the company was awarded "Energy Conservation Project Award in New District" by Management Committee of New District, Wuxi City in 2011.

[4] Post- East Japan earthquake reconstruction support

After east Japan earthquake, to assist Japan to reconstruct, personnel from Sumitomo Electronic Management Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Shanghai), Sumitomo Electronic Materials Science and Technology Company (Wuxi), Sumitomo Plastic Chemical Trade Company (Shanghai) and so on made positive contribution to the disaster area, and donated to the disaster area through the Red Cross and Consulate, etc.
